A topic always and forever close to my heart: the world of lesser-known yet exceptional books. These hidden gems, whether authored by independent or traditionally published writers, deserve to be brought into the limelight every single week, in my opinion (thank you Jane Friedman for starting a bestseller list that highlights books often overlooked by the formula behind the "big" lists).
As a 6x author, I understand firsthand the dedication, sweat, and some days, excessive swearing that go into crafting a narrative that can transport readers to faraway places, evoke deep-seated emotions, and establish a profound sense of relatability. However, many of these amazing works go unnoticed amidst the glittering allure of blockbuster bestsellers and always-mentioned titles.
So, in this list of Top Books that Should Be Bestsellers of 2023 (as submitted by my social media following because, let's be honest, I want others' suggestions so I can add them to my bookshelf!), I hope to further recognize the incredible variety of voices that contribute to our collective bookshelves.
Note: These books weren't necessarily published in 2023 (though most were). These days, books have the potential to become bestsellers YEARS after they were first published, which is both a gift and an incredible opportunity for authors everywhere!
Independent authors pour their hearts into stories that may not be backed by a major publishing house. Still, they possess irresistible messages and lessons. Traditional publishing is also an ocean of undiscovered brilliance, as many books don't get the level of press or publicity they deserve.
So let's actively seek out and share these gems. Whether discovered on a dusty back shelf in a local indie bookstore or through Instagram, Threads, or Facebook, let's champion the underdogs of literature to, not only to support authors in their creative endeavors but also to ensure that the world gets to savor the magnificent storytelling that makes reading such a joyous and transformative experience.
